Bookstore Glossary of Terns
ACCESS CODE – A unique single-use code that provides access to digital textbook or online course materials.
ADOPTION – The process of selecting and approving the textbooks and/or course materials that will be used for a specific class and term.
ALT VERSION (AV) – This term denotes that an e-book is an alternative version of the physical textbook.
CANVAS – This is the LMS (Learning Management System) used by JCCC students to access their courses and Day One course materials.
CHOOSE ONE (CO) – This term is used in pairs, indicating that there are two different editions of the same book, and students should select one.
COURSEWARE – Supplemental digital material that goes beyond the e-textbook. It can consist of quizzes, exams, homework, etc.
DAY ONE (D1) – JCCC refers to its Inclusive Access Program as Day One, emphasizing immediate access to course materials on the first day of class. See INCLUSIVE ACCESS (IA).
E-BOOK – A digital version of a book that can be read on various devices. Typically, only readable text, not interactive features.
E-TEXTBOOK – A digital textbook designed specifically for academic use. Typically includes features such as highlighting, note-taking, and a search tool.
INCLUSIVE ACCESS (IA)– A nationwide course materials model that delivers required digital textbooks and resources on the first day of class at a discounted price, with the option for students to opt out.
ISBN (INTERNATIONAL STANDARD BOOK NUMBER) – A unique 13-digit number that identifies books and other course materials.
OER (OPEN EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES) – Teaching, learning, and research materials that are freely available to anyone over the internet. They are openly licensed, allowing for free use, adaptation, and distribution, which helps reduce the cost of educational materials and increases access to knowledge.
OPTIONAL (OP) – This term denotes that a textbook or other course material is not a necessity for a course but may offer a student additional insight.
PRINT UPGRADE – This is a physical loose-leaf edition of a Day One text. Print upgrades must be adopted by the instructor in conjunction with the Day One product and are not available for all Day One titles.
REQUIRED (RQ) – This term denotes that a textbook or other course material is a necessity for the designated course.
